The security ramifcations are overstated, as Danek explained. However, I agree that it is silly to optimize all of this typing when the http prefix describes something about the underlying transport. That information affects how the client gets packages. As time goes on, we'll probably add ftp, file, and possibly others to the existing list. In the CLI, I'd rather the user continue to enter a URL, instead of something else. For the GUI, it seems like it would be straight forward to list the transport types in a dropdown and then construct a URL based upon the user's selection.
