I disable and remove depots all the time with no ill effects. Also, if the package only disappears to reappear under the aegis of another publisher, then will the client handle that any better than one just disappearing? I'd be willing to see a solution for for administrative removal of packages from a depot such as the /pending folks want not require any client changes, though any such changes would certainly be very nice to have.
