Glenn,
this looks like a typo error in the packagemanager-preferences.schemas GCONF
schema file, for key /apps/packagemanager/preferences/api_search_error
the schema file states type as :
<type>str</type>
This is incorrect the type should be
<type>string</type>
This schema file is delivered by SUNWipkg-gui, cc'ing Michal as he would know
where log bug and get this fixed.

I can't find anything in defect.opensolaris.org. This appears to be
packagemanager related. I don't have any log files close at hand from
2009.06 that I can double check to see if this is new or not.
Anyone have any thoughts?
