You can prevent it running by disabling the SMF service
svc:/application/pkg/update.

Hello,
everytime it is scheduled to start running, my box becomes totally unusable.
It is annoying to wait 1 or 2 minutes every time, until I can open a
terminal window, from where I can pkill -9 it.
No, I am not complaining. I just let you know. Yes, my system is
already paging at this point. Why? Because 4GB are not enough anymore
for a bit daily Desktop work (if you keep the machine on 24x7).
pm-checkforupdates hogs the CPU.
top confirms the felt degradation: pm-checkforupdates alone consumes
49% of the DualCore CPU, therefore 98% of a single core system! And
not just 5 secs, but quite like eternally long (until I kill it).
Just FYI.
