Apparently the symbol is a vestige and the reference to it should be removed for org-gnome-new-mail-notify.eplug.xml. I did the deletion shown in this upstream change http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/evolution/trunk/plugins/new-mail-notify/org-gnome-new-mail-notify.eplug.xml?r1=33354&r2=33530 and the error seems to have stopped.
I'm not sure if the change affected the evolution or evolution-plugins binary; I rebuilt and reinstalled both. Whether I have a working installation is unclear. My efforts to stamp out my previous, faulty installation were only partially successful, and I still see only some of my folders. I've told it to ignore subscriptions.
