out of curiosity: Why do you need to type the root password on the
FreeRunner? Isn’t it mostly used via ssh?

We could also try to copy the password from the system we are installing
from, or prompt the use for a password during installation (which is
likely to be done via SSH), or set an empty password directly with sed.
