Great, thanks. I discovered this solution similarly. Sorry I didn't update the bug report, Ubuntu was doing it all automatically so I wasn't paying a great deal of attention. I had installed Wesnoth 1.10 because it was the most recent version, but then a friend of mine only had Wesnoth 1.8 and we wanted to play a networked game so I tried installing 1.8 in parallel.
I guess the downfall of having multiple versions in the repositories designed to be installed side-by-side. Thanks for checking into it.
