I notice in the strace I pasted some prodding of ~/.qt. I have ii gtk-qt-engine 1:0.8-1 theme engine using Qt for GTK+ 2.x ii gtk2-engines-g 1:0.7-4 transitional dummy package (gtk2-engines-gtk-qt) installed but I don't use them due to their bugs. I just tried removing them to see if it would help and - it did! So, something about one of those packages, combined with their configs presumably, has broken as part of this transition. This probably belongs to gtk-qt-engine then.
