As mentioned on the debian-gis list [0], I've bit the bullet and dropped the liblwgeom dependency from spatialite to untangle the spatialite->postgis->gdal->spatialite circular dependency. spatialite (4.3.0a-5) has been uploaded to unstable and should be available in the archive soon. This should unblock the next gdal transition and also help you with the issues it caused you.
