I have replied to your ITP; tomcat5.5 is in experimental. The
Debian Developers Reference is a great (and essential) guide to getting
started; the specific secction on what to do before filing an ITP can be
found here:http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs.en.html#s-newpackage While it only explicitly specifies checking the WNPP, the underlying assumption is that one will have checked the distributions as well for a pre-existing package.
