You are right, but I'm afraid that we will build some Maven infrastructure that will lock us into this bad situation, or need to be replaced later. It will perhaps be fine if the Maven builds use versions explicitly specified by the maintainer, just like Ant builds, but any automatic version guessing that doesn't take ABI into account would be dangerous.
