I was able to get this working with the 'rlwrap' currently in Squeeze
in about a minute, following the directions in this article posted by
Jarosław Arlet above:

The REPL was useless without this, especially for someone learning
(most of us). Is there any chance this will make it into the next
package? Seems like an easy but extremely useful fix.
