As far as I know, people have been working on trying to get all the missing packages packaged, and update the old ones. Unfortunately, I have not had the time to help myself. I am not sure if anyone else has tried building npm yet, but it is good to know we are getting close. I will let the other more active team members comment on how best to incorporate your work.
