Package: vlc-nox
Version: 1.0.4-2
Severity: wishlist
is it really necessary that vlc-nox *Depends:* on libavc1394-0 and
libraw1394-11? My laptop doesn't even have a firewire port, I'm sure
vlc can operate without these libraries? And yes, space is not always
cheap, think embedded devices or running off a USB stick or SD card...
The same is probably true of other libraries, e.g. do I need to have the
libdvd* and libdvb* installed if I have neither of these devices? I'd
wish vlc dependencies were more graded...
THANKS FOR CONSIDERING THIS WISH!
Florian

While this bug established that it might be feasible to lower some Depends to
Recommands, this change would re-introduce many issues that we solved over the
last couple of years. We would have to re-generate the plugins cache whenever
one of the dependencies is installed or removed. Otherwise vlc falls back to
ignoring the cache and starts to load all installed plugins. In case of a Qt 4
application, e.g. using phonons-backend-vlc, this would mean that Qt 5 is also
loaded in the same process space and that would kill the whole application.
So I don't think saving a Depends here or there is worth the considerable
amount of maintenance overhead.
I'm closing this bug as wontfix.
Cheers
