i have plenty of systems without alsa, which i don't consider to be
"weird" (even though i probably won't install cmus on them)

apart from that, there is no alsa in the kfreebsd and hurd archs.


honestly i think if the plugins are split away, then _all_ plugins
should be split away, in order to allow users to select what they need.
(even if that means that a user can force an installation without any
output plugin at all, virtually rendering their package "unusable")
