I actually only do this if the updated package introduces new symbols.
If this happens on a regular basis, then it is surely not intended.

Unfortunately, symbol files won't work as they cannot produce
application packages with alternative dependencies (cf. the
libavcodec53 | libavcodec-extra-53 dependency in the application
packages).
