Probably not... we'd most likely use an autoconf macro that will set a
suitable build option with most common compilers.

We're stepping up the frequency of releases.  I'd guess at a couple of
months for 0.92.  We're aiming for a bug-fix release (0.91.1) sooner
though, with a lot of backported patches from 0.92.  There's a draft
changelog here:
