...then attempt to use it, I get the following error.
$ pbmtext -font 9x15.bdf hello world > hello-world.pbm

Seems to work now. (I used a pregenerated 9x15.bdf for testing
https://invent.kde.org/aerusso/konsole/-/blob/v3.4.91/fonts/9x15.bdf
since running a fontserver is very unusual and I do not).
