Package: netpbm
Version: 10.0-7

The version of "pnmtopng" in the current Debian netpbm package is
version 2.37.5. Separately from the upstream development on
Sourceforge, Greg Roelofs has been fixing problems in pnmtopng on its
own, and is now at version 2.38; his package is at:

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/apps/pnmtopng.html

In particular, the treatment of alpha channels is better in this
version than in either the version now in Debian or the Sourceforge
release I tried (10.24). For instance:

Suppose that ramp.pgm is the output of "pgmramp -lr 500 500".
Suppose that black.pbm is the output of "pbmmake -black 500 500".

According to my reading of the documentation, the output of
"pnmtopng -alpha ramp.pgm black.pbm" should be a smooth gradient
between fully transparent on the left and fully opaque black on the
right. Using version 2.38, this is indeed what I get. With the current
Debian version, what I get is a gradient that's opaque black on the
left and transparent on the right, except that the very leftmost
column is fully transparent. With the Sourceforge version, I get no
gradient; instead, the result is a fully transparent rectangle filling
the left half of the image, and an opaque black rectangle in the right
half.

Hello Stephen,

I am closing this wishlist bug-report now. The fork seems to be dead.
According to https://sourceforge.net/projects/png-mng/files/pnmtopng/
the latest change happened in 2005 when 2.39 was released. OTOH netpbm
is actively maintained.
