Package: initscripts
Version: 2.87dsf-8
Severity: wishlist
File: /etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh

I am writing this while offline, so I did not check for duplicates.
Sorry if there are.

I just transferred my system to a new harddrive and couldn't get
/var/run to be mounted as tmpfs; /var/lock was a tmpfs, however.

The problem turned out to be a missing /var/run directory on my root
filesystem (/var is separate). Since mountkernfs.sh runs before /var
is mounted, it mounts the tmpfs on the root filesystem, to have them
later moved into /var using pre-mountall and post-mountall.

/var/lock is a directory on my root filesystem, but /var/run is not.
It took me a while to figure this out. Maybe
/etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh could make sure to be more verbose about
the problem, possibly even give the opportunity of a shell so that
the admin can fix the issue right there once and for all?

Thanks,
