your screenshot indicates that this is actually a problem in gnome-shell and I can reproduce the problem with GNOME 3.4 (when disabling the device, it is still listed as connected). It works fine with nm-applet though (you can test that in the GNOME fallback/classic session). Can you please verify, that nm-applet(network-manager-gnome) actually works correctly. If so, I will re-assign the bug to gnome-shell. It might need some adjustments for network-manager 0.9.8.
