I don't think we should shun code samples. I think that we should
place more merit on people who have been involved in open source
projects, people who have C experience, people who can do concurrent
programming and the like. Obviously we can't be too strict.

I think interested students should be required to demonstrate that
they have the time and perseverance necessary to complete the project.
They should participate on 9fans, this list, or something else.
Indeed, wiki edits, patch generation, and the like is all useful. Our
big foul-up last year was in communication, and, while it's sometimes
impossible to avoid that, I think we should somehow place more
up-front value on that as well. (Be it via IRC or some other public
forum.)
