Fixed this. The problem was I had blindly grabbed an older version of Muse that didn't include muse-protocols.el. I had read on another archived thread that the latest version of Muse might also cause me problems, so I went and grabbed muse-3.02.8 instead. Now Planner 3.40 installs and loads with no problems.
