They don't interact much. Appointments in planner *are* added to the
global appointment list, so the same reminder mechanism is used as for
appt-add, but you can add appointments that are not in planner pages
using appt-add.
This can be useful if you want to be reminded of something that you
don't consider to be planner-worthy, such as
M-x appt-add [ret] 12:30 [ret] Take the cake out of the oven [ret]
You can, however, remove planner-appointments using appt-delete. But
they might reappear again if you don't remove the task or schedule item
from the planner page. That's a loose end in the implementation of
planner-appt that needs tidying up sometime.
