Is anybody handy with basic electronics? I think people would be interested
in things like
Thermocouple that can be polled. You can phone in for temperature reports (or
have a cron job that runs once a minute and makes a phone call with a
recording if the temp exceeds some threshold).
You can buy these in kit form, just need a soldering gun. I had one but
not sure I can find it :-(
Phone into your home and give it an eta. It'll set the furnace.
Spend $20 on an X10 "firecracker" off eBay, it takes a fairly simple
command code over RS232 and can turn eg., lights (flashing or otherwise)
on or off, that plus a simple script and you're on the air. Having
something turn on immediately is more visceral than "I'll be home in
half an hour", though you could have them enter such stuff too. How about
Enter 1 to turn lights on, 2 for furnace, 3 for A/C.
I can't remember offhand if the Firecracker can sense the current on/off
state of a device.
