A few days ago I wrote a KRunner-plugin for creating special characters from its hexadecimal-code. (e.g. #3b1 for α). It also has the possibility to configure aliases (e.g. #a instead of #3b1): http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Character+Runner?content=122629
