not sure on that. i already cringe on the keyboard layout indicator appearance applet because it is text (and i wouldn't know how to make it different here) if random icons had text on them, i think the whole appearance would be really ruined. for things like unread emails, i probably need just an indicator like an overlay icon, and if it's colored, in a monochrome systray would detach itelf enough to serve for the goal i think.
