An unsure +1, if an SMP kernel really works everywhere and doesn't post problems. I.E. Amarok and probably some other apps do some magic on their own to ensure smooth ridding on SMP machines and wouldn't this post problems?? About the mistake of installing UP on SMP machine - the spec could look up /proc/cpu or whatever to ensure proper kernel is being installed.
