If I have bootsplash [1] installed and use geninitrd [2] to generate initramfs for recent kernel [3], the splash initializes fine but I end up with a kernel panic (unable to mount initrd, tried: romfs).
Why does it think it's romfs? Removing bootsplash (or just unpacking and repacking which drops trailing data too) fixes the problem.
