FYI kernel's default ARG_MAX is 131072 (as of 2.6.29.2 I'm just running).
1. Despite of:
$ getconf ARG_MAX
2097152
2. zsh (4.3.6 from Th)
$ echo $SPECS | wc -c this is builtin!
562207
$ /bin/echo $SPECS
zsh: argument list too long: /bin/echo
$ true $SPECS builtin too!
$ /bin/true $SPECS
zsh: argument list too long: /bin/true
3.
$ export SPECS
$ [any command]
zsh: argument list too long: [command]
And I just gave you working solution (with xargs), zsh can handle this
itself by zargs.
