darn. Whatever happened to the real kernel hackers around here? I know
a little bit about the kernel's internals, but mm is way over my head.

Actually, tar up your devfs, reboot into a 2.2 in emergency mode (-b),
untar in /dev, and you have a pseudo-devfs under 2.2. I used that when
I needed VMWare (which also doesn't work on latest 2.4).
