I tried, but it's not better. 'a' gives 'a', 'z' gives 'Unknown key pressed:
122 z'. That was using the SDL gui under X; is it supposed to work in the
console too? I tried, but it said 'panic, Couldn't initialize SDL: Unable to
open mouse'. Strange, since my mouse does work in text mode.

Also, the SDL FE always issued a segmentation fault when closing down, both
in X and in text mode.
