Well, I could find nothing wrong with my setup, but reinstalled the compiler
and associated bits and pieces anyway.  Still didn't work, so I've resorted
to linking libgcc.a into the .so by hand.  Now I can start the emulator and
VM without any apparent difficulties - I just need to get the latest updates
over the weekend so I can try and boot something in it :)
