Try the ./configure options.  ./configure --help should help you here.
I'm going to have to put up an INSTALL file, since aparently nobody
anymore compiles their own software the good old fashioned way that all
of the gnu stuff is built.

Also, it has been said before on this mailinglist that W98 doesn't work in
plex86 quite yet.....
