To respond to the part of your report I quoted above, we'll probably keep
the old configure method for a little while longer, but not in the long run
because that method is unmaintained, and the new cmake-based method produces
faster configurations and builds, it is easier for us to maintain, and works
on more platforms than the old method. However, up to now we have not had
any solaris x86 reports for our cmake build system so your cmake feedback
for that platform would be most appreciated.

All you need to do is follow the instructions at
http://www.miscdebris.net/plplot_wiki/.  For example, to address the
availability of cmake issue that you raised, follow the link on our wiki to
http://cmake.org/HTML/Install.html which gives clear instructions on how to
build cmake from source for any Unix system when no binary version is
available (as in the solaris x86 case).
