Your FORTRAN 77 compiler is clearly having trouble with -fPIC (it interprets it as "-f -P -I -C"), but what is more: it is called "f77". This makes me a trifle suspicious: is it the GNU FORTRAN 77 compiler or not? If it is, Hazen's comments about the version might be relevant. Otherwise we have a case of mistaken identity ...
