I forgot to mention that I had tested this change for all interactive
devices and all seemed well.

I have now also tested this change by using the ImageMagick "display" app to
look at the following noninteractive results (after revision 10287 which
corrected a bad default compression value for jpeg which was causing
terrible blurriness in all jpeg results):
