I have committed this fix as of revision 10624. The tests (using example 23) showed some increase in missing glyphs for plfreetype devices, but the missing glyphs are rather exotic math symbols so I don't think it is too big a price to pay to obtain the actual fonts desired by the user in general rather than the automatic "symbol" substitution for certain inconsistent cases. Note, that since symbol is an alias of sans for the generic font device drivers, and example 23 is sans, this fix had no effect on generic font device results for example 23. However, in general, this fix will have a good effect for non-sans examples (the user will get the requested non-sans font rather than having a symbol=sans font automatically imposed) for generic font device drivers.
