That is correct.  There is a lot of Fortran work that went into 2.8.0 and
even more into 2.8.1 but there is no way those changes can be backwards
compatible. Accordingly, our build system for the svn trunk that will become
the forthcoming release uses one Fortran support method for CMake2.6.x and
another for CMake-2.8.x.

I am actually surprised 5.9.5 worked with 2.8.0.
