plstring3 (the 3D form of plstring) should normally supersede plpoin3 (the 3D form of plpoin) since plstring3 gives you access to all the glyphs available with TrueType fonts (for modern TrueType aware device drivers).
An earlier revision dealt with introducing this new API for C and also changing C example 18 to replace plpoin3 with plstring3. As of revision 11355, I have propagated this new API to python and python example 18 whose results agree with the C version.
