Obviously download numbers for Microsoft products are not so easy to come by. 
However download.com has Visual Studio  Professional 2010 listed with 700,000 
downloads. I don't know how this compares to the free Express version, plus 
this version has been superceded by the 2012 version for about 9 months and 
presumably this is only for the downloads via download.com itself and excludes 
downloads from the Microsoft site. Although, given PLPlot's target audience, 
perhaps they will tend more towards MinGW. So there are many caveats, but in 
terms of order of magnitude the two toolchains seem to have similar usage. 
Anyway I don't want to turn this into a huge discussion now as you say Alan. 
Just making the point that it is something that should be worried about if/when 
things get that far.
