This sounds like a good plan - I have not had any luck yet with hunting down 
the [exit]
bug under Linux. My plan is to use strace to see whether there are different 
libraries loaded
in the two cases, and whether this could be causing the trouble. However that 
will be
something that requires care and concentration. As I am suffering (almost 
literally ;)) from
a mild case of flu, moving to MinGW/MSYS will probably be more productive.
