OK.  In that case the single-function approach loses a lot of its
appeal, and your current multiple-function API may be the best choice.
Anyhow, I suggest you just go ahead with committing that since there
is nothing like actual code and a good example to help focus
discussion.  We do have a fairly long release cycle this time so there
should be plenty of chance to change the API if someone can figure out
something better.
