I think I gave too many specifics before since if there is a gcc problem, then it likely has nothing to do with xwin (where my build happened to fail with the --std=c99 flag). Anyhow, I have changed the subject line accordingly, and I would appreciate it if those with access to gcc (even if on platforms without X) to try the experiment of building PLplot with the --std=c99 flag to see whether my bad experience with that gcc option is unique to my system and gcc version or whether it is a common issue.
