Hi Simon:

The ./configure command is part of the historical autotools-based build
system which has been deprecated for quite a few months now. Essentially no
work has been done on that build system since last July because we have
a much better CMake-based alternative.

Please follow the directions given in the INSTALL file for our new
CMake-based build system. It gives more reliable builds than what was
previously available for Linux, Mac OS X, and windows, faster builds, and
more extensive (i.e., more PLplot features can be configured) builds. Most
importantly, if you do find any problems with it, it is usually extremely
easy for us to fix.

For now, we do still include the autotools-based build files in our tarballs
so that the configure command mostly works, but even that minimal effort with
the old autotools-based system is not going to continue indefinitely, and in
anticipation of when it will be gone we are trying to strongly discourage
its use. By the way, did I mention that our CMake-based build system was a
better alternative? :-)
