Do you the identical alignment as shown at
http://plplot.sourceforge.net/examples/?

If you do get the same alignment as at the SourceForge examples, then you
have achieved the GD "state of the art" at this time.  I do agree the
Hershey fonts are better aligned than TTF ones, but nobody has yet figured
out how to improve the alignment of the TTF fonts.
