Valery,

I don't have an answer for the aspect ratio question.  The Cairo
device crash when starting a new plot after calling plend is a known
bug, though it only affects some OSs (Debian, Ubuntu and now
apparently ALT Linux are affected while Fedora is not).  One
workaround which seems to work on Debian and Ubuntu is to use plend1
to end a plot rather than plend.
