Actually, I had forgotten that we had made an official announcement about this (which is what I should have referred to in my previous e-mail). See Announcement VII in README.release. (We also copy a version of that file to SF as the official release notes for each release there.) There are 12 such announcements in README.release at the moment so I can see why you missed it in the crowd. :-) However, I urge everybody here to take the time to read through at least the announcements for every release because they document fundamental changes (such as deprecating individual device drivers) to PLplot which may immediately impact some veteran users of PLplot.
