Hi José:

We usually decide release dates about a month in advance. At this
point I can say there will be no release of 5.9.8 for (quite) a while
yet. There are still a lot of things we need to sort out for this
release cycle such as finalizing the plcolorbar API, propagating
plcolorbar (once that is finalized) and pllegend to all our language
bindings and examples, determining the length of the rendered string
using the qt device drivers, etc., (The rendered string length helps
pllegend to determine the correct size of the legend automatically
without the user having to do hand-adjustments of the legend size for
each device to avoid text slopping over the edge of the legend.)

It is definitely usable and produces good-looking results. Try the
last few pages of example 33 with -dev xcairo in any of C, Python,
OCaml, or Octave to evaluate the current plcolorbar status for
yourself.

In my view that plcolorbar API is not yet complete, and I have made
some suggestions to Hez about possibilities for improvement. All
cutting-edge users of PLplot who have an interest in colorbars are
encouraged to do that as well. But thanks to Hez's on-going efforts
plcolorbar is definitely getting there and certainly usable now if you
are willing to keep changing argument lists as we continue to change
the API until we finalize it during this release cycle.
