Right. I've built one piece of it, but the configuration on a non-*nix system is complicated. Then I've got to figure out how to stream to memory instead of disk. The code to stdout seems to be throughout the code that I've looked at.

According to http://sourceforge.net/projects/netpbm/, netpbm
will run on both Windows and Linux, and the 16-bit support is
already in netpbm (as is support for the bmp format).
